Arthur P. Davis - Beach Point YC Trophy
December 7, 2008
Larchmont, NY

“Jan K. Smeets, Commodore of Larchmont YC when the
Independence Cup was held, accepts the trophy”
At the 113th Annual Meeting of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound, Larchmont YC and American YC were jointly awarded the Arthur P. Davis – Beach Point Yacht Club Trophy. This trophy is given in recognition of Outstanding Achievement at U.S. Sailing’s Independence Cup which was held June 6-9, 2008. The Independence Cup is the national championship for disabled sailors and several of this year’s competitors represented the USA at the 2008 Paralympics in China.
The Arthur P. Davis – Beach Point Yacht Club Trophy is the YRA’s oldest award. It was established in 1955 to recognize yachting achievement on Long Island Sound. It has been used to recognize both an outstanding single achievement in running an event or championship, or to recognize the long-term contributions of a particular member club or organization. Larchmont YC last won the award in 2005 in connection with its hosting of U.S. Sailing’s Hinman Trophy. In bestowing this year's award, the YRA commended Larchmont YC's Buttons Padin and the two other co-chairs.
At the meeting, Larchmont also received a keeper trophy for winning the 2008 Glencairn LIS Team Racing Trophy and various LYC members were given prizes for their LIS summer successes, including Com Crocker and Kurt Weisenfluh, who won the Russell J. Nall Memorial Trophy for the best percentage among all the WLIS one-design classes, and former Commodore Jan K. Smeets who won the Overall Caper Trophy for the season IRC championship.
