Larchmont YC Juniors Dominate

Larchmont YC’s junior sailors had tremendous success this year in the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound big boat races, placing first and second overall in the Beach Point YC Overnight Race and first overall at the Dorade Trophy. 

Thanks to the generosity of Rear Commodore Carl Olsson (Morning Glory) and the syndicate of Harald Edegran, Jeremy Henderson and Tony Leggett (Conundrum) the juniors had the use of two J/105s for the regattas.  The 39th annual Dorade Trophy was held August 11 at Stamford YC and is named in honor of famous yacht designers Rod Sparkman & Olin Stephens’ classic yacht.  15 junior teams from across the Sound took the helm and competed in borrowed keelboats.  Conundrum placed first in Division 2 with two bullets, followed by Morning Glory’s two seconds.  Conundrum was named the overall winner of the Dorade Trophy on corrected time and the Larchmont YC juniors will be presented with the trophy in January at the annual JSA luncheon. 

The Beach Point YC Overnight Race started on the afternoon of August 12th.  The fleet sailed a 70-mile course, starting off of Mamaroneck, beating west to Execution Rocks Light, turning east to round Stratford Shoals Lighthouse and then heading back to Mamaroneck to finish.  Morning Glory and Conundrum were neck and neck until Stratford, when Morning Glory slipped ahead.  Both boats led the fleet to Stratford and finished ahead of many larger and faster boats.  Morning Glory took first overall in the 13-boat fleet, edging out Conundrum by 15 minutes.
