Sailors Raise Money For Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

LYC hosted the second annual Leukemia Cup Regatta, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Westchester. The inaugural regatta was dedicated to the memory of former LYC Marine Facilities Director Scott Seaver, who was stricken by the blood disease at the age of 28 and died shortly before his 31st birthday. The 2012 edition of the regatta has raised over $133,000 and counting, even though the weather did not cooperate for the sailors.
A massive front moved over LYC on Saturday afternoon of the
Leukemia Cup, bringing 30-35 knot winds and driving rain.
Over 50 volunteers and hardworking staff from LYC joined together to coordinate all the moving parts necessary for a two day, 150-boat regatta (covering 4 racing circles for big boats and juniors) and gala evening fund raising dinner and silent auction. From a fundraising standpoint, the regatta was a great success. On the water, difficult weather made for trying racing conditions. A large cold front steamrolled the racecourse Saturday afternoon, bringing winds over 30 knots and cutting racing short for all divisions. The big boats were able to get in a single race, as did all junior fleets except for the Optimist Green fleet, which managed four quick races. The front sucked all of the energy out of the atmosphere, leaving behind a no-wind vacuum on Sunday that prevented additional racing.

Fundraising continues until December 31st, and event organizers hope to reach their goal of $140,000 raised for the 2012 regatta. Event co-chairs Lauren and Tommy Spelman want to thank each and every member who helped plan, donated, volunteered or otherwise contributed to the great success of this worthwhile effort.
