As the overall winners of Larchmont’s National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta held in September, Com Crocker and Kurt Weisenfluh were invited to participate in the Caribbean NOOD Regatta in the British Virgin Islands November 8-11. Sunsail provided the NOOD winners with a fleet of seven Sunsail 39 cruisers for what the Sailing World race committee described as “pillow fight racing”. The Larchmont team was joined by the overall winners of the NOOD regattas in San Diego, Seattle, St. Petersburg, Detroit, Chicago and Marblehead. The all-Larchmont team also included Maura Weisenfluh, Dual Macintyre, and John and Allyson Mawe.
The teams picked up their boats in Road Town, Tortola on Friday evening, after which Sailing World hosted a rum punch welcome party dockside. Sailing World organized point-to-point races each day between Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Norman Island, with windward/leeward races off Tortola the first day. The second day’s race was Larchmont’s performance highlight of the trip, with the Larchmont team taking second place in a photo finish just behind San Diego.
Other highlights included a morning at the Baths on Virgin Gorda, Laser racing and a beach barbeque at the Bitter End Yacht Club, and an afternoon at the Soggy Dollar in White Bay, Jost Van Dyke followed by a night of socializing at Foxy’s. The team reports that the Shields class flag is now hanging at Foxy’s adjacent to the Larchmont YC burgee. A closing party and some time at the Willie T. ended the four days of sailing, sun and socializing.
