Race Week 2018

Welcome you to the 120th Larchmont Race Week. Regardless of whether this is your first or fortieth Race Week, you should be proud to be taking part in this tradition.

With the exception of two years during the Second World War, Larchmont Race Week has run continuously since 1896 (Grover Cleveland was President and Henry Gillig was Commodore). Race Week was conceived to replicate the success of Cowes Week, an extended regatta for sailors from Europe and the East Coast of the United States. Race Week was an adults-only enterprise until 1926 when Larchmont Junior Race Week was added.

As the sport of sailing evolved, so did Race Week. Although the huge schooners and 12 Meters are no longer part of it, today’s Race Week operates with multiple racing circles each of its nine days. Over 1100 adult sailors, Race Committee members, and volunteers participate on the two weekends and are joined by almost 600 juniors sailing during the week plus their coaches and parents, and the many local LYC families that house them. Add to that the LYC members who come down to be part of the festivities and sailors’ guests and Larchmont Race Week has two thousand participants.
The Club has worked hard both to continue the traditions of Race Week and to re-energize it. Expect great racing, welcoming shore-side activities, and the traditional Race Week camaraderie that last year led one Race Week veteran to say, “Now, this is the Larchmont Race Week I remember!”

Be part of our 120th Race Week even if you’re not a sailor. Race Week is the highlight of the Club’s year and not to be a part of it is to miss being a part of the Club’s history and traditions.

I look forward to seeing you on the water and on the lawn after sailing,
 Andy Kaplan, Commodore
