Shields

Larchmont Yacht Club is the home of Shields Fleet One.  The Fleet is the largest keel boat class at Larchmont.  Cornelius Shields was a member of Larchmont when he commisioned Sparkman & Stephens to design the new One Design class.  The boat has lines that Olin Stephens himself describes as "almost too sweet".
Shields
Shields race in the YRALIS's weekly racing, which starts off

Mamaroneck equidistant between LYC and American Yacht Club.

Vanguard 15s

Larchmont Yacht Club is home the largest Vanguard 15 fleet in the country with over 60 boats racing locally. The boat's light weight and simple design appeals to the numerous parent/child teams and beginning racers in the fleet, as well as our many former intercollegiate All Americans.

Sunday afternoons from mid May to early October features fleet racing with 20-30 boats on the line each day. Additionally, there is pick-up team racing on Thursday nights from early June through August. The Club hosted the Vanguard 15 National Championship in 2000 and 2008 and has also hosted the New England Championship and the United States Team Racing Championship in recent years. The Club hosts three Vanguard 15 regattas annually that are open to sailors from across the country: a spring regatta in mid June, a division at Larchmont Race Week in mid July, and a Team Race Invitational in late July. The fleet's sailors are known for their welcoming atmosphere and camaraderie and the Vanguard 15 program has been instrumental in introducing many new members to the Club. If you are interested in Vanguard 15s, please visit the fleet's website or feel free to contact Fleet Captains Mike O'Connor at mjoconn5@gmail.com or Ward Young at wardyoung@gmail.com

Viper 640

LYC's newest one design class is the Viper 640. The fleet started in 2011, and is 12-boats strong for 2013, with nearly 30 Vipers in Western Long Island Sound at various clubs. LYC will be the host of the 2015 Viper North American Championship. The 21-foot sportboat weighs only 750 pounds, with an efficient bulb keel, and carries nearly 700 square feet of sail downwind, including a large asymmetrical spinnaker on a carbon fiber sprit. The Viper is easy to sail with 2-4 people, quick to plane and is a strong light air performer. The high performance of this keelboat, along with its surging popularity in the U.S., made it an easy choice as a great addition to the existing one designs racing at LYC. The calendar includes Saturday YRA racing, local events with other Viper fleets in the Sound, and travel events in Newport, Marblehead, Charleston and Miami. For information or crewing opportunities, contact fleet captain Peter Beardsley at wpbeardsley@gmail.com or check out the class website at http://www.viper640.org

S-Boats

Designed in 1919, The Herreshoff S-Class (www.herreshoff-s-wlis.org) has been racing out of Larchmont YC since 1940. The 27.5' S-Class boat is a wooden classic...quick in light air, stiff in a breeze, and remarkably agile in response to her helm. The cockpit provides unusually ample working space for a one-design racer and is a very comfortable for day-sails with family and friends; it is moderately deep, comfortable, and relatively dry.

The cabin provides shelter from foul weather, storage and space for an outboard engine if desired. Please see our website or contact the fleet captain, Sean Park, at admin@herreshoff-s-wlis.org for more information about this growing fleet

Ideal 18s

The Ideal 18 is a fun daysailer designed by Bruce Kirby. The boat was commissioned with Simplicity, Comfort, and Performance in mind. Whether you Team Race, Fleet Race or just like to cruise the Ideal 18 is everything you've ever wanted in a small keelboat. And a whole lot more. It's just the right size. Plenty of room for friends, yet easy to rig and sail by yourself! The main is easy to set and the roller-furling jib is self-tacking. The boat is also equiped with a powerful 245 sq. foot spinnaker for Fleet Racing.

The Ideal 18 program at LYC includes: adult learn to sail programs, ladies sailing, sailing clinics, parent-child programs, Team Racing programs and much more.

IODs (International One Designs)

IODThe International One-Design racing yacht was commissioned in 1936 for the Larchmont Yacht Club racing fleet. In fact, the first hull is still highly competitive and sails from LYC. Since the Spring of 1937, the IOD has been continuously raced in the waters off Larchmont by a succession of Long Island Sound's legendary and most competitive sailors, including Cornelius Shields, Arthur Knapp and 'Bus' Mosbacher. The IOD is a truly international class with fleets in Norway, Sweden, Bermuda, Maine, Nantucket, San Francisco, Fisher's Island and Marblehead, MA.

Skippers and crews from the Long Island Sound fleet regularly compete in those far-flung locations as well regular YRA racing. For more information on sailing with the IOD fleet contact Jim Bishop Jr.

at Bishopjr@caithnessenergy.com.
